Amazon Fresh Stores in Chevy and Friendship Heights Closing
Amazon has confirmed that its Amazon Fresh grocery stores in Friendship Heights and Chevy Chase Lake will permanently close this Sunday, February 1, 2026. The move is part of a broader decision by Amazon to shut down all Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go grocery stores across the United States, marking the end of a costly experiment with Amazon-branded physical grocery retail.
In Montgomery County, the closures will affect four locations in total. These include stores at Chevy Chase Lake, Friendship Heights, Shady Grove Road near the Rockville and Gaithersburg border, and White Oak. The shutdown represents a significant change for communities that had expected Amazon Fresh to become a long-term part of their local retail landscape.
The impact is especially noticeable in the Chevy Chase area. Residents at Chevy Chase Lake were anticipating a full-service grocery store within walking distance as part of the development’s original vision. With Amazon Fresh closing, that expectation will no longer be met. Similarly, residents in Friendship Heights will now have limited grocery options nearby, with Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods Market remaining the only full-size supermarkets within easy walking distance.
The closures also affect local developers. The Chevy Chase Land Company, which had planned its developments around Amazon Fresh locations at Chevy Chase Lake and the Collection at Chevy Chase, had counted on the stores to serve as anchor tenants and drive foot traffic.
Amazon has not announced any replacement plans for the closed locations. For now, the decision underscores the challenges even major retailers face when transitioning from online dominance to physical grocery stores.
