Washington Gas Continues Work Following Major Bethesda Gas Leak
Utility crews from Washington Gas are continuing repair efforts after a significant gas leak affected parts of downtown Bethesda earlier this week. The incident prompted road closures, safety precautions, and ongoing work as officials monitor the situation.
According to Montgomery County authorities, the leak was initially identified near the intersection of Old Georgetown Road and St. Elmo Avenue. However, repair operations later shifted slightly away from that point, with crews focusing on Cordell Avenue between Old Georgetown Road and Norfolk Avenue.

This area had already been included in the larger safety perimeter established by county police as a precaution. Roads were partially blocked and access was limited while emergency teams worked to secure the location and prevent further risk.
Washington Gas has not yet released a detailed public statement about the cause of the leak. Officials have indicated that safety inspections and infrastructure checks are still underway as part of the response process.

The incident has also drawn attention because the surrounding area has experienced gas-related issues in the past. One of the most notable leaks occurred in June 2024 along Norfolk Avenue, not far from the current repair zone.
Residents and businesses in the area have been advised to remain alert while work continues. Utility crews are expected to remain on-site until all necessary repairs and safety checks are completed.

Events like this highlight the importance of routine infrastructure maintenance and rapid response from emergency services to protect public safety in busy urban neighborhoods.
