Construction Update: Montgomery County’s First Hobby Lobby Store Takes Shape
Construction is steadily progressing on Montgomery County’s first Hobby Lobby location, rising at 15750 Shady Grove Road inside the 270 Center near the Gaithersburg and Rockville border.
The new arts and crafts store is being developed inside a former Best Buy space. While most interior work remains hidden behind construction barriers, visible exterior upgrades are beginning to take shape. Building modifications, updated storefront elements, and site work suggest the project is moving into a more advanced phase.

Local interest in the store has been strong. The retailer has not previously operated a location in Montgomery County, and demand for arts and crafts supplies has increased following the closure of nearby JOANN Fabrics and Crafts stores, including the Gaithersburg branch.
Once opened, the new Hobby Lobby is expected to compete primarily with Michaels, which currently serves as the main arts and crafts chain in the area.
An official opening timeline has not yet been announced, but ongoing construction signals steady progress toward launch. For local shoppers, artists, and hobbyists, the store is expected to add a major new retail option in the region’s creative supply market.
