Major Gas Leak Closes Intersection in Downtown Bethesda
A major natural gas leak has forced the closure of a busy intersection in downtown Bethesda, prompting an emergency response from multiple agencies late Monday evening.
The affected intersection includes Arlington Road, Old Georgetown Road, St. Elmo Avenue, and Wilson Lane, an area known for heavy traffic and pedestrian activity. Authorities have closed all directions while crews work to locate and secure the source of the leak.

According to the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service, crews detected elevated gas levels throughout the surrounding area. Higher concentrations were found near utility manholes, leading responders to expand their search beyond the original intersection.
By late evening, the investigation area included Cordell Avenue and Del Ray Avenue near Old Georgetown Road, as a precaution.
